We moved to Bullmarket back in the summer of 1958. It was a heavily wooded area of southern Mississippi back in those days. Even now, some fifty years later, there still isn’t much to that place. Oh, they have a lot more homes, a few stores nowadays.
The little boy was crumpled on the roof of the building. John Hanover could just barely hear the screaming of Teddy’s mother in the chopper as it went down toward the many onlookers below.
John could barely believe his eyes! The pilot in the KYVX News Helicopter was motioning for everyone to move back. It was one of those small helicopters that could carry the pilot and one other person.
Against what he had always been taught, John opened the door. He was expecting a wall of flame. Instead, he was greeted with the grey fog of smoke. Fire alarms, smoke alarms were suddenly going off everywhere around him.
John Hanover still remembered the feeling of numbness as the paramedics wheeled the lifeless body of Danny into the waiting ambulance. He didn’t even feel the continued slapping by his hysterical wife or even what she was ranting about.
